Education and Experience

Dr. Pelco began as the Director of the Service-Learning Program at Virginia Commonwealth University in June 2008. She also holds a joint faculty appointment in the VCU School of Education.  Dr. Pelco earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and completed her post-doctoral fellowship in Developmental Disabilities at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Pelco has held a number of clinical and faculty positions including lecturer at the University of South Australia, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine, and school psychologist in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Most recently, Dr. Pelco was Professor and Co-Director of the School Psychology Program at the College of William & Mary, where she served from 1992-2008.

Teaching and Research

Dr. Pelco has taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses in the areas of service-learning, prevention and intervention in schools, school-based ethics, and assessment. Dr. Pelco teaches the orientation (Honors 399) and supervision (Honors 492) courses for the VCU service-learning teaching assistants. Dr. Pelco currently serves as a co-investigator for GreenSTEM@VCU, an interdisciplinary project funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service to prepare middle school science and technology teachers to teach ‘green service-learning’. Her research interests include early intervention, family-school-community partnerships and service-learning.

Professional Service

Dr. Pelco currently serves on the VCU Council for Community Engagement and on the Richmond Public Schools School-Community Partnership Advisory Council.

Family

Dr. Pelco grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where most of her family still lives. She is married to Christopher Ball, a professor of psychology at the College of William & Mary, and has three children—two sons in high school (Macon & Casey) and a daughter in middle school (Julia).

Service-learning graduate assistant

Kevin Reeves

Kevin is currently a doctoral student in the School of Education at VCU. Prior to becoming a VCU doctoral student, Kevin worked as an academic advisor and mathematics instructor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. This is his first year of doctoral studies and he plans to specialize in higher education issues. As a graduate assistant in the Service-Learning Program, Kevin has put his mathematical skills to work in collecting and analyzing program data. He is also involved in supervising the service-learning undergraduate teaching assistants’ program. Kevin is a basketball and football fan and fills several leadership positions in his church.
