Service-learning at VCU

Service LearningService-learning combines campus life with community life by reaching beyond the classroom to assist the local area. While bettering yourself, you also better your community through exciting and inspiring volunteer projects. Service-learning is rewarding, engaging and life changing.

What is service-learning?

Service-learning at VCU is a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets community-identified needs. This collaborative teaching and learning strategy is designed to promote and encourage course content, personal growth and civic engagement. Typically, a service-learning course requires a minimum of 15 hours of service with selected nonprofit and community-based organizations or schools.

Service-learning means advantages for …

VCU students – Make a difference in your community while meeting your academic objectives.

VCU faculty – Enhance your courses by extending your classroom to the real world.

The Richmond community – Strengthen your organization or school with the support of interested VCU faculty and students who contribute service hours to your organization’s specialized service.
