Lobs and lessons

Curriculum

CurriculumThe participants in the Lobs & Lessons program come to the Mary and Frances Youth Center two afternoons a week. The children spend time learning various life skill lessons through interactive activities with a focus on five core components:

1. Getting along with others.
2. Regulating emotions.
3. Being coachable.
4. Practicing healthy habits.
5. Learning the sport of tennis.

Activities that center on these concepts have the children working is small groups, large groups and role-playing. Sample lesson topics include: how to find the positive, why it’s important to understand your feelings and how to identify them, teamwork, being part of the solution, and the effect of positive thinking.

On the tennis court the children learn the different strokes of the game; the forehand, backhand, volley, serve and how to rally. They also learn the lines of the tennis court, how to keep score and the importance of sportsmanship.
