Get involved – faculty
As a faculty member involved with the Community Service Associates program, you are usually assigned for one semester and expected to commit an average of eight hours a week to community projects. You may serve for a maximum of two consecutive semesters. Your department will be reimbursed an amount equivalent to the cost of an adjunct replacement for one three-credit course.
Projects can be initiated in two ways:
- A request from a community organization [Word document]
- A request from a faculty member [Word document]
Application process
The Division of Community Engagement staff and experienced Community Service Associates review and select applications for funding. Funds are provided to support organizations with limited resources and identified unmet community needs. To apply:
- Download CSAP Faculty Application form [Word document]
- Signatures are required from the department chair and dean.
- A letter of support from the community agency must accompany the application before it can be reviewed.
- Return your completed application to the Division of Community Engagement. Completed applications will be reviewed and recipients will be notified by mail. If your application is accepted, funds (the amount of an adjunct salary for one undergraduate three-credit course) will be transferred to your department. The use of these funds can be negotiated between the faculty member and the department chair. Potential uses of the funds include:
- Replacement of faculty member by an adjunct in one course.
- Summer pay for the associate.
- Travel monies.
- Purchase of equipment or software for research or teaching purposes.
- Stipends for students involved in the project.
Projects can occur during the fall or spring semesters, or during the summer.
Project completion
At the end of your project, you are expected to submit a brief report [Word document] to the Division of Community Engagement.
You retain the right to any scholarly materials developed but must be in accordance with your partner agency’s guidelines. A presentation on the Community Services Associates Program can be made to academic departments upon request. Contact Catherine Howard, vice provost, Division of Community Engagement.
