
CARING TO ACT calendar
The Caring to Act Calendar provides opportunities for the VCU community to participate in community service projects in the Richmond region in the spirit that through doing we grow as contributing citizens. Each year the Council of Community Engagement identifies projects that address a range of needs in our community. Each project is designed and led by VCU units and community partners and is open to students, staff, faculty, and alumni participation. In addition, educational opportunities are linked to the events to broaden our understanding of the related issues and to explore our roles as citizens in the Richmond region.
Individuals and groups are encouraged to review the list of projects and to register. Projects can be nominated for inclusion on the Caring to Act Calendar by submitting a nomination form to the Division of Community Engagement.
VCU employees who choose to participate are encouraged to use Community Service Leave:
Commonwealth of Virginia Policy: School Assistance and Volunteer Service Leave
- Est. July 2001: Permits (or, in the case of volunteer fire and rescue service, requires) agencies to grant employees up to 16 hours of time off withpay per leave calendar year to provide volunteer services through eligible non-profit organizations within or outside their communities
VCU Policy: Community Service Leave
- Provides faculty and staff (with or without children) with paid leave each calendar year to meet with school officials about their children, to attend school functions in which their children are participating, to perform school-approved volunteer work in a public school, or to participate in volunteer community service organizations. On July 1, 2009, CSL increased by 8 hours for employees serving as volunteer firefighters and/or rescue service members.
