Campus Food Drive
October 2011
Lead VCU Groups: VCU Dining Services, Psi Chi National Honor Society, VCU Business services
Food collection bins will be available at designated locations on the MPC and MCV campuses. Departments can set up their own collection bins as well. VCU Dining Services will focus on the reduction of food waste on the Monroe Park campus (Shafer Dining Hall and Student Commons). Based on the determined pounds of food waste reduction, a matching amount of food will be donated to the Central Virginia Food Bank.
Invasive Species Removal

James River Park System
Lead VCU Group: Green Unity 4 VCU
A James River clean-up initiative hosted by VCU Green Unity. This event will focus on the removal of invasive plants along the James River. Equipment will be provided on-site. Volunteers should dress warm and weather-appropriate.
Paint the Town Green

Monroe Park
Lead VCU Group: VCU Student Government Association
Participating Neighborhoods: Jackson Ward, The Fan, Oregon Hill, Randolph, Carver.
A collaborative neighborhood clean-up between the VCU Monroe Park campus and its surrounding neighborhoods. Immediately following the clean-up, each neighborhood will host a social event.
Project Homeless Connect

Richmond Convention Center

Each volunteer will assist a homeless person in obtaining community resources from the many agency representatives in the Convention Center. Homeward of Richmond conducts this annual event to assist hundreds of Richmond’s homeless persons. No special skills required. More details will be provided.

MLK Day Celebration
January 16, 2012
Lead VCU Group: VCU AmeriCorps
The VCU AmeriCorps Program in partnership with 2nd Presbyterian Church will be hosting the 2nd Annual 'Beloved Community Celebration.' This event will be held on MLK Day, Monday, January 16th. Individuals are encouraged to attend the short worship service in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. King. Fellowship and refreshments will follow the interdenominational service.
Community Health Fair

Additional VCU groups: School of Social Work, School of Public Health, School of Dentistry, School of Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy administration
The Community Health fair reaches under served/uninsured residents of Richmond to provide FREE health care screenings and check-ups as well as health education information. A children’s area provides games, moon bounce and healthy living information. Volunteers are needed to assist with the children’s area (no training necessary). Training is provided for anyone assisting with the health care stations.

Affordable Housing Week

Community Partners: Habitat for Humanity, Boaz and Ruth, ElderHomes
In observance of Richmond Affordable Housing Week, area nonprofit agencies will host several service projects around Richmond. The activities will include home repair, carpentry, painting, and etc. No prior skills required.
