Safety
When the Carver-VCU Partnership began, the major concern of community members was safety. Since then, the partnership has worked toward enhancing the quality of life in the community by decreasing the actual and perceived neighborhood risks.
VCU Police Office
VCU Police have a satellite office within the community programs space at 1103 W. Marshall St. The office is accessible to the community.
Bike patrol
VCU Police received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to increase the number of community police officers, including a bike patrol for Carver. Community police officers on bikes and in cars have closed open-air drug markets, made numerous drug and weapon arrests, closed crack houses and enforced trespassing on abandoned properties and towing of abandoned cars.
School security
VCU Police assist with security at Carver Elementary School. Officers help the crossing guards and lobbied to get school warning signs. Since VCU Police’s presence at Carver Elementary School began, teachers and administrators have reported a greater sense of safety.
Outreach events
The Carver-VCU Partnership assists the VCU Police each year with the purchase and distribution of holiday meals and gifts for 10 to 15 families in the Carver community for Thanksgiving and Christmas. VCU Police also plan and participate in Carver Elementary School activities, such as the Spring Carnival and an Easter egg hunt for the Head Start classes. In the fall, officers provide boxes of school supplies for children.
Adopt-a-Senior
The Adopt-a-Senior program was created by VCU Police. Officers visit seniors regularly and have collected and purchased air conditioners and fans for seniors during severe heat waves.
