FRLG 591 Transculturation: Spanish Immersion
“Anita and Stacy were outstanding teachers and role models for teachers. I learned as much from them personally as from the content of the course. Anita Nadal's enthusiasm and energy for the topic and for teaching in general are contagious, motivating and energizing.”

“Entendemos que el vocablo transculturación expresa mejor las diferentes fases del proceso transitivo de una cultura a otra, porque éste no consiste solamente en adquirir una distinta cultura…,” Fernando Ortiz
The participants will read and discuss current research concerning the theory of and the application of transcultural studies. The purpose of this course is to demonstrate to secondary education instructors how to incorporate transculturation into their current curriculum.
Conducted in the target language, the materials and lectures will include a variety of genres: literature, art, music and film. Each with a focus on how to apply transcultural studies in practical
classroom settings. Participants will use their respective schools’ texts to create classroom presentations that both integrate the Standards of Learning and demonstrate the value of transculturation. By doing so, instructors will design lessons that will compel their students to reflect meaningfully upon the Latino culture and its growing impact in the United States and abroad.
Participants will need to bring with them their teaching textbooks and any accompanying ancillary materials.
