CRAF 591 introduction to kilnworking Workshop for Teachers
“This was a great experience and opportunity for me to explore myself as an artist and not just an art teacher.”
–'08 Participant, Painting
Summer 2010 dates TBA
3 graduate credits
This workshop will cover the fundamentals of working with sheet glass. The materials will range from window glass to art glass (colors, patterns and textures) and the techniques will include image transfer, painting, cutting, grinding, forming, slumping, and fusing sheet glass. The tools and equipment we will use and discuss are affordable and readily available in Richmond. The techniques of fusing and slumping can easily be replicated in ceramic kilns. This is an introductory course that will open you up to possibilities of glass as an artistic material- without the need for an expensive studio.
Instructor Sayaka Suzuki received her BFA from Tulane University and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been teaching in Glass and Foundation Sculpture for four years at VCU and has been invited to teach private workshops at the Corning Museum of Glass, the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and Urban Glass in NY.
What will you take home?
By the end of the week, you will have begun a body of work and will have new ideas and techniques for your own art classroom. You will be inspired by your fellow classmates and the local art scene! There will be an opportunity/option for you to go around the galleries and studios in Richmond to get to know the local artists who work with glass. Come be a part of the art scene in Richmond and go home refreshed and ready for new projects.
General information
The summer art workshop meets for a week of studio work. Although this class is highly technical, and studio-based, you will have opportunities to visit museums, galleries and artists’ studios. It also includes an independent follow-up component (short paper or lesson plan) applying knowledge and skills learned during the summer to your instruction. Follow-up work may be completed anytime from the end of the workshop through October. Credit can be awarded when follow-up work is submitted.
