LFSC 591 All in the Family: Genes and your Health

“Thank you! I enjoyed this class. I look forward to taking future teacher workshops at VCU. I learned more than I even imagined. I will definitely include a great deal of what I learned into my genetics unit next year”
–'08 Participant, Genetics

Summer 2010 dates TBA
3 graduate credits

This course will use a case-based approach to illustrate the importance of family health history in understanding health and disease risk. Emphasis will be placed on common variation, genetic disorders, diagnostic tools, strategies for communication and the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic testing. Hands-on activities, laboratory exercises and panel discussions will provide participants with the foundation for creating up-to-date lesson plans and activities for their own classroom.

This workshop is made possible through the generous support of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. If you need financial assistance, some funding for tuition, fees and campus housing is available. You can apply when you complete the registration form.
