summer teacher workshops
Learn more about the VCU summer workshops for teachers and preregister at www.community.vcu.edu/programs/sws. The workshops consist of one week of intensive studio work on campus and a follow-up written unit applying the summer’s work to each participant’s own classroom during the fall semester. Grades will not be available until the end of the fall semester. The workshops are not, strictly speaking, part of the off-campus art program, but credit earned may be used for re-licensure or as part of the M.I.S. degree program. Students must preregister online through the workshop Web site.

Topics: Drawing and Mixed Media Intensive: Focus on the Figure
3 credits
Monday, July 21-Friday, July 25
9 a.m.-5 p.m.
This workshop emphasizes the role of drawing and experimentation in developing a body of artwork inspired by figurative themes. Artists working in drawing, painting, assemblage, photography and fiber will benefit from this course. We will explore the work of contemporary artists who focus on the human form and work from the model during our studio time. Initially we will create a series of small mixed-media drawings/photographs or assemblages, which will be a point of departure for the creation of a series of figurative mixed-media work. Students should bring samples and/or slides of their current work to the first class meeting. There will be an opportunity for participants to visit area museums, including a day trip to Washington, D.C., and artists’ studios. There will be a follow-up project in the fall. Oliver
