Carmen Alvarez-Keefer
Carmen Alavarez-Keefer earned a B.F.A. in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.S. in education from the University of Houston. An experienced educator, she presently is the art teacher at Virginia Run Elementary School in Fairfax County. Her latest exhibition is “Prints,” a juried show at the Ellipse Gallery. She is certified by the PMC Guild to teach precious metal clay.
Katie Boltz
Katie Boltz earned her M.F.A. from VCU in 1988 and was an adjunct instructor in crafts at the university for 12 years. She has been an art teacher in Caroline County since 2000. Boltz has had ceramic work in several national juried shows and is a juried member of the Artisan Center of Virginia.
Sally Bowring
Sally Bowring received her B.F.A. from Goddard University in Vermont and her M.F.A. in fine arts with a concentration in painting and printmaking from VCU. She has been teaching at VCU for 15 years. A member of the M.I.S. administrative team, with responsibilities in admission and advising, she may be reached at sbowring@vcu.edu.
Amy Bruce
Amy Bruce received her B.F.A. from Alfred University and her M.I.S. from VCU. She has been teaching for 16 years and currently works for Fairfax County Public Schools at Edison High School. In addition to teaching, she is a member of Del Ray Artisans and has been exhibiting her work in the Tri-State area for five years. Her most recent shows include the Del Ray Dozen Photography Exhibition and the Gallery West National Juried Show. Bruce also has been asked to be an instructor/member at the Workhouse Arts Center at Lorton, Va. where she will both teach photography and exhibit her work.
Sara Clark
Sara Clark received her B.F.A. in art history and her M.F.A. in fine arts with a concentration in painting from VCU and also holds a certificate in studio arts from the Holden School of Art in Charlottesville. She was a 1999-2000 recipient of a professional fellowship award for painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She exhibits widely in the area, maintains an active painting studio and is on the adjunct faculty at VCU.
Sharon Clohessy
Sharon Clohessy received her M.A.E. from VCU in 2000 and her B.A. in art from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1992. She is currently a fine arts teacher specialist with the Virginia Beach Public Schools as well as an adjunct instructor at Virginia Wesleyan College and VCU.
Don Crow
Don Crow received an M.F.A. in fine arts with a concentration in painting from VCU in 1986. He has recently spent several years teaching at the VCU School of the Arts in Qatar. Previously, he taught in the art foundation program, the painting and printmaking department, and the photography department at VCU. He exhibits both locally and regionally.
Ginna Cullen
Ginna Cullen is retired from the Louisa County school system where she taught art for 25 years. She received a B.A. from Mary Washington College and an M.I.S. degree from VCU. A member of the M.I.S. administrative team, with responsibilities in development, recruitment and advising, she may be reached at mvcullen@vcu.edu.
John Figura
John Figura is visiting faculty in the Catholic University Department of Art in Washington, D.C. He has taught a wide variety of courses in the D.C. area, and his most recent exhibition was at Signal 66 Art Space last year. He received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from VCU.
Bruce Fleischer
Bruce Fleischer earned an M.F.A. and M.A. in studio photography from the University of Iowa and a B.F.A. in studio arts and art teacher education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He has his own photography business, Picture This Photography by Bruce Fleischer, and teaches at the Arlington Career Center, where he developed the digital imaging curriculum.
Kurt Godwin
Kurt Godwin received his B.F.A. from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and his M.F.A. from VCU. He teaches painting and drawing at a variety of locations in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. In addition to teaching, he exhibits regularly in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Brian Kirk
Brian Kirk received a B.F.A. from George Washington University in 1976 and an M.I.S. from VCU. He is the fine arts department chair at Stone Bridge High School. Kirk has traveled widely in Europe, Mexico and Asia and offers a multicultural approach to creating 3-D art. An avid sculptor, his artwork has been published and is exhibited in the Washington, D.C., area and includes steel, copper, stone, mixed media, cast and fused glass, as well as ceramic tiles and sculpture.
Lynn Murphy
Lynn Murphy received an M.F.A. in fine arts with a concentration in sculpture from VCU in 1988 and a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking in 1982. She has been teaching at VCU since 1987 in sculpture and art foundation. Her most recent exhibition, at ADA Gallery in Richmond, is titled “Flutter.”
Amie Oliver
Amie Oliver was awarded a B.A. from Mississippi State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. from Bowling Green State University in mixed media graphics in 1984. She has been teaching in higher education in Virginia since 1986. Her mixed-media works have been published extensively and exhibited in galleries from New Orleans to Maine. Oliver’s experiences teaching painting, drawing, sculpture and Photoshop are most effectively combined in her mixed-media curriculum.
Julia Pfaff
Julia Pfaff is a 2000-01 recipient of an Individual Artist’s Fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Following a family tradition, she began quilt making at the age of 10. With an undergraduate degree in art history from the University of Toronto and an M.F.A. from VCU, she divides her time between being an educator and a studio artist. Her quilts have been exhibited at the American Craft Museum in New York, the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., at several locations in Canada and Japan, and are part of numerous collections including those of the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Va., and the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Va.
Nancy Prichard
Nancy Prichard received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in art from Radford University. She recently retired from the Virginia Beach City Schools where she taught artistically gifted students at the Old Donation Center. She has numerous publications and has exhibited widely.
Sydney Walker
Sydney Walker received a Ph.D. in art education from Florida State University, a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Alabama, a master’s degree in art education from the University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham Southern College. She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Art Education at Ohio State University.
Bob Worthy
Bob Worthy received his B.F.A., M.Ed. and M.I.S. degrees from VCU. He has taught fine art at the college level in Virginia since 1976 and pioneered online art classes for the Virginia Community College System. He exhibits locally and regionally and is a founding member of Exposure Unlimited, a group of artists from the Fredericksburg area who have exhibited together since 1985. In October 2000, Worthy was recognized at the Fredericksburg Regional Arts Awards, as an individual artist, for outstanding achievements and contributions to the cultural life of the greater Fredericksburg region. He also received a Certificate of Recognition from the Governor’s Awards for the Arts the same month.
