Summer 2008 information

Welcome to summer 2008 VCU off-campus graduate art classes.

As well as offering individual classes, VCU offers the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in interdisciplinary arts, a degree in studio art that can be completed off-campus. Degree information is provided elsewhere on this Web site.

The Master of Art Education (M.A.E.), which continues to be offered on the Monroe Park Campus of VCU, will no longer be offered as an off-campus degree. The art education courses for the M.A.E. are scheduled as on-campus classes and taught by faculty as a mix of online and face-to-face courses. Studio art classes, which M.A.E. students can take as part of their degree work, will continue to be offered off-campus at various locations throughout Virginia.

Registration

Official registration for off-campus courses will be held on the first day of each class, and the university will send a bill following that registration. Please do not send payment until you are billed.

Because we want to be sure that adequate space and materials are available, we ask that students preregister. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. In rare cases, we may have to cancel a class if there is not sufficient projected enrollment. Unless you are notified that a class has been canceled, please report to class at the indicated time and place. We look forward to seeing you there.

Cost for off-campus courses

Off-campus art classes are billed at the special rate of $566.55 (in state) and $2,113.80 (out of state) for a three-credit class. Students who are considering registering for nine or more credits should consult the student accounting Web site for appropriate billing information. The special rate does not apply to full-time students. Please do not pay until you are billed. If you fail to receive a bill within a reasonable period of time, contact Sue Munro at (804) 828-6931.

In addition, degree-seeking off-campus students will be assessed an art major fee of $75 per semester for part-time students and $265 per semester for full-time students. Nondegree-seeking students will be charged a per-course (not per-credit) fee as listed below. The fees help offset administrative costs to the School of the Arts in the delivery of the off-campus program and make it possible to continue offering off-campus classes. These are not materials fees. Fees are correct as of summer 2008.

Degree-seeking students

Students may take classes without being enrolled in a degree program, but interested students are encouraged to apply to a degree program as soon as possible. Unless there are special circumstances, the VCU Graduate School will accept (to count toward a degree), no more than six credits taken at VCU or elsewhere before admission to a degree program. Degree information and requirements are available elsewhere on this site.

Students who are interested in pursuing a degree should:

• Visit the VCU Graduate School Web site for information about the application process and downloadable forms. For questions about the application process or M.I.S. degree requirements, contact Sue Munro at (804) 828-6931 or sfmunro@vcu.edu.
• Send the completed application to the Graduate School.

At this point, the Graduate School will forward applications to the M.I.S. admission committee for review. Applicants will receive a letter from the Graduate School informing them of the committee’s decisions.

After being accepted into the program, students will be assigned an adviser and should establish contact with him or her as soon as possible. The advisers will keep students informed about steps in the respective programs from this point onward. Please remember that after finishing all classroom work, students must be in continuous enrollment through the semester of graduation and that degrees should be finished within five years.

Grades and transcripts

VCU no longer sends out grades by mail and students will need to access their online accounts to view their grades. That requires an eID and a new strong eID password. In order to set this up, students must know their student ID, or V, number. This number can be found on the VCU bill. Please make a copy and keep it in a secure place.

With V number in hand, visit www.vcu.edu and click on the “Log-in Help” icon to set the eID and password. Be sure to include a capital V as part of the student number.

After these are set, students should be able to access eServices and proceed as outlined below to find a grade report or the form to request a transcript. If you have trouble, call the Help Desk at (804) 828-2227.

In order to access grades, visit www.vcu.edu:

• Select For current students.
• Under Academics, select Academic record.
• Follow the instructions for grades.

A printout of grades is the same as a grade report.

For a form to request an official transcript, visit www.vcu.edu:

• Select For current students.
• Under Registration, select Records and Registration.
• Select forms.
• Select Transcript Requests.

Complete the form and send it to the address listed on the form.
