Off-campus Graduate Art
Since 1993, Virginia Commonwealth University has offered off-campus graduate art classes in locations from the Washington, D.C. area to Tidewater. Classes are open to all qualified students (persons with undergraduate degrees in art or equivalent experience) but are particularly designed for art teachers interested in license renewal, a graduate degree program or personal enrichment.
During the fall and spring semesters, classes meet one night a week, usually from 4:30-8:30 p.m. In the summer, classes are scheduled for 10 all-day workshops over a two- or three-week period. The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in interdisciplinary arts is offered to off-campus students; however, students do not need to be in a degree program to take classes.

“Untitled” (mixed media, 9” x 12”) was created by Melanie Kluender in a mixed media class taught by Amie Oliver. Kluender enrolled in her first off-campus graduate art classes in spring 2007 and has since taken a variety of classes. In all these classes, she has found herself drawn to images of birds. While the birds represent many things to her personally, she likes to keep her images a bit ambiguous and open to the viewer’s personal interpretation. The use of text in the image supports the idea of a diary, providing information, but also maintaining a secret quality. She uses a variety of materials, layering them to create a complexity and depth that mirrors human nature. |
