Sculpture and extended media courses

SCPT 591

Topics: Wheel-thrown Sculpture
3 credits

This course will take a sculptural approach to wheel-generated form. Discussion and demonstration will address altering the symmetrical thrown piece, constructing composite forms and working with the multiple. Critical examination of works-in-progress will continually question: movement/gesture, rhythm, mass/void, the object in context and voice of the material. Conceptual development will be encouraged and, depending upon student interest, installation issues will be part of the ongoing discussion as the clime of contemporary ceramics is explored.

Occasional, basic lectures will address transformation of the clay product to ceramic object, with emphasis on using kilns and addressing surface. A class project may include investigating non-commercial, textured glazes to broaden the palette for surface design.

Though the focus of this course is to foster individual artistic development, class discussions will include application of techniques explored to the K-12 lesson plan. Beginner and intermediate students welcome.

Topics: Ceramic Sculpture
3 credits

Students learn advanced hand building techniques to create a series of related sculptural forms. Clay forming techniques demonstrated include slab, drape, extruded, coil, and pinch-pot. Emphasis is on creating a body of work that relates to a personal theme. Experimentation with texture, stains and glazing techniques will be demonstrated and encouraged. Students will be responsible for providing their own clay and glazes. Instructor will fire in classroom to minimize transporting clay projects.
